Det er mulig at Tysklands samling og industrielle vekst på 1800-tallet blir viktig pensumstoff i forbindelse med 1. verdenskrig, ettersom dette forrykket den europeiske maktbalansen noe vanvittig (økonomisk ifht. Storbritannia, maktpolitisk ifht. Frankrike), men få også med deg betydningen av svakhetene i imperiet Østerrike-Ungarn og det førrevolusjonære Russland (samt de umiddelbare årsaker til krigen, som skuddene i Sarajevo).
